Privacy policy
This policy explains how GearExplained handles personal information in connection with gearexplained.com. It covers browsing the site, following affiliate links and contacting us. In this policy, "we" and "our" refer to GearExplained.
For privacy questions or requests, email legal@gearexplained.com.
Information you give us
When you email us, we receive your email address, any name you provide, your message and its attachments. We use that information to answer questions, investigate corrections and manage the correspondence. We do not add people who contact us to a marketing mailing list.
Technical information and site search
Website hosting and security services process technical information needed to deliver pages, diagnose errors and prevent abuse. This can include an IP address, browser and device details, the requested page, a referring website and the time of the request.
Site search matches your query against an index in your browser. A query can also appear in the page address, browser history or a link you share. Page addresses may appear in technical logs and, when enabled, analytics reports. Please keep personal information out of search queries.
Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager
We plan to use Google Analytics 4 through Google Tag Manager to understand which articles people read and how they use the site. These services are not currently enabled.
When enabled, Google Analytics can use cookies and similar identifiers to measure visits, page views and interactions. Its reports can include referral sources, device and browser information and approximate location. Google Tag Manager manages the tags that load these services. The data collected depends on the tags and settings we enable.
We will update this policy and provide the required privacy choices before enabling these services. We do not currently run advertising pixels or remarketing tags. Read more about Google Analytics data practices and Google Tag Manager data practices.
Cookies and your choices
The site does not currently set analytics or advertising cookies. Where consent is required, optional analytics must wait for your permission. Simply browsing the site does not give that permission.
You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Those settings apply to that browser and device and can affect how other websites work. Google also offers a Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. It controls Google Analytics measurement, not every form of website logging or tracking.
Affiliate links and other websites
GearExplained may earn commissions from purchases made through affiliate links, including Amazon links. These links contain identifiers that attribute a referral to GearExplained. A retailer or affiliate service may use cookies or similar technology to associate a visit with a qualifying purchase.
Following a link takes you to a service with its own privacy practices. Retailers handle checkout, payment information and shipping details. We do not process your order or receive your payment card details. Affiliate reports may provide information about referrals, qualifying purchases and commissions.
Read our affiliate disclosure and review a retailer's privacy policy before sharing information with it.
Who processes information
Service providers may process information to deliver website hosting, security and email services. Cloudflare Email Routing forwards messages sent to our editorial and legal addresses to our inbox, where our email provider processes them. Analytics providers will process usage information if we enable the services described above.
We may disclose information when the law requires it, to respond to a valid legal request or to protect people and the website against fraud or abuse. We do not sell editorial contact details or give them to advertisers for their marketing.
How long we keep information
We keep correspondence for as long as needed to answer the request, resolve an editorial issue or maintain a necessary record of a correction. Retention also depends on unresolved disputes and legal obligations. Technical records follow the retention settings of the services that process them. We will state the applicable analytics retention settings when analytics is enabled.
No website or email service can guarantee absolute security. Access to correspondence should be limited to the people and providers who need it for the purposes described here.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live and which laws apply, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information, receive a copy of it, or object to or restrict its use. You may also withdraw consent where processing relies on it and complain to your data protection authority. Withdrawing consent does not change the lawfulness of earlier processing.
Send requests to legal@gearexplained.com. We may need information to verify your identity and locate the relevant records. We will respond as required by the law that applies to your request. Some information may need to be retained to meet legal obligations.
Our service providers may process information in countries other than your own. Where applicable law requires safeguards for those transfers, those requirements still apply. Contact us for information about the providers relevant to your request.
Children's privacy
GearExplained is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it where required.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our data practices change and revise the date above. Material changes will receive any additional notice or consent that applicable law requires.
