A camera works without a subscription when it saves video somewhere you own, a microSD card, built-in storage or a hub, and keeps its useful alerts free. The four below meet both tests, according to their makers. Pick by where the camera goes and how it gets power:
- Tapo C120 for most indoor or covered outdoor spots near an outlet.
- eufy Indoor Cam C220 for watching a whole room from one corner.
- eufy SoloCam S340 for an outdoor spot with no power and no card to manage.
- Reolink Argus 4 Pro for a wide outdoor view, such as a yard or driveway.
This guide is AI-generated from manufacturer documentation and CNET's published testing. GearExplained did not test these cameras. The product cards at the end link to Amazon, and GearExplained may earn a commission. That does not decide which cameras appear here.
What "no subscription" should mean
Storage is only half the question. Some cameras record to a card for free but put detection behind a plan, so you get motion alerts for every passing car instead of a person alert.
Wyze is a clear example. Its own support page, updated May 14, 2026, says a microSD card gives you continuous local recording, while person, package, vehicle and pet detection come with its Cam Plus subscription. That is why the Wyze Cam v4 is not on this list, even though CNET named it a budget pick in its no-subscription roundup.
Also check whether a card is included. Tapo and eufy say the card is sold separately for the C120 and C220. Check the Reolink listing before you buy.
1. Tapo C120: the simplest pick
CNET chose the C120 as its top camera for a one-time purchase after testing it, citing its higher resolution and versatility. It is a plug-in camera with a USB power adapter in the box, rated IP66 so it can go indoors or outside.
It records 2K+ video to a microSD card up to 512GB. Tapo says person, pet, vehicle and baby-cry detection are free, and its Tapo Care plan only adds cloud features such as a 30-day clip history. A magnetic base and a metal plate make it easy to place.
The limits are practical ones. It needs an outlet nearby, and it connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
2. eufy Indoor Cam C220: one camera for a whole room
The C220 pans and tilts through 360 degrees, so one camera on a shelf can follow a person across a room. eufy says it records to a microSD card up to 128GB with no monthly fee, including 24/7 recording, and detects people, motion and sound on the camera.
Its privacy mode is useful for a camera inside your home. When you turn it on, eufy says the camera turns to face away, then stops recording.
It is indoor-only, works on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, and does not support Apple HomeKit. eufy's product page does not say how it is powered, so check the box contents before you plan its spot.
3. eufy SoloCam S340: outdoor, no wires and no card
The S340 has 8GB of storage built in, so it records without a card or a hub. eufy lists no monthly fee. It runs on a built-in battery topped up by a removable 2.2W solar panel, and eufy rates the battery at about three months on its own, based on 300 seconds of recording a day.
It has two lenses, a 3K wide view and a 2K telephoto, with 8x hybrid zoom, pan and tilt, and a spotlight for color night vision. Human and vehicle detection run on the camera.
The 8GB of storage is the catch. It holds event clips, not continuous video, and eufy says the S340 does not support 24/7 recording. You can add a HomeBase S380 for more storage. It uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
4. Reolink Argus 4 Pro: the widest outdoor view
The Argus 4 Pro combines two lenses into a 4K, 180-degree view, which suits a yard or driveway better than a narrow camera. Reolink says its ColorX night vision shows color at night without a spotlight.
It records to a microSD card up to 512GB, or to a Reolink Home Hub if you run several cameras, and Reolink lists no monthly fee for local storage. It runs on a rechargeable battery, works with Reolink's Solar Panel 2, connects over Wi-Fi 6 and is rated IP66. You can set motion zones and privacy masks.
Choose it over the S340 when field of view matters more than zoom, or when you want a large card instead of 8GB of built-in storage.
How they compare
| Camera | Where | Power | Local storage | Video |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tapo C120 | Indoor or outdoor, IP66 | Plug-in | microSD up to 512GB | 2K+ |
| eufy Indoor Cam C220 | Indoor | Not stated on eufy's page | microSD up to 128GB | 2K, pan and tilt |
| eufy SoloCam S340 | Outdoor | Battery and solar | 8GB built in, event clips only | 3K wide plus 2K telephoto |
| Reolink Argus 4 Pro | Outdoor, IP66 | Battery, solar panel supported | microSD up to 512GB | 4K, 180 degrees |
Which camera to buy
If there is an outlet nearby, start with the Tapo C120. Use the C220 when you want to cover a whole room from a corner. For outdoor spots without power, choose the S340 if you never want to manage a card, or the Argus 4 Pro for the wider view and bigger storage.
